Pruning apple tree courses for 2016

2016 sees the return of our popular apple tree pruning courses held here at The Orchard, Redmoor Fruit Farm, Redmoor Lane, Wisbech, Cmabridgeshire, PE14 0RN.

This hands-on pruning course is held in our traditional 8 acre orchard with apple trees of various ages, from mature Bramleys between 50 and 100 years old to the youngest tree planted in 2014.

What will I learn?

You'll learn, through theory, demonstrations and practical hands-on experience the necessary skills and expertise to prune apple trees. The techniques you learn will enable you to care for young, newly planted trees, keep mature trees healthy and productive and to "renovate" old trees.

This is what one of last years participants had to say about the course:

“I have an allotment with a number of fruit trees on it including apples. I have been trying to find some where I can get tuition in pruning the trees correctly so I was pleased to find this site. I had a really great day with Jim last week. He expertly guided me through what is required to get my trees in good shape as well as giving me tips and advice on the care of them. I am very happy to recommend the pruning days. I also recommend the home cooked food served in the tea rooms!" Robin

Who is the course for?

The pruning apple trees course is for anyone over 16 who wants to learn about pruning fruit trees. No previous experience is necessary. To get the best out of the course you will need to be physically able to have a go at pruning one of our trees under the guidance of your tutor, this can involve the use of ladders but doesn't have to as we have plenty of smaller trees that can be worked on from the ground.

The majority of the course will take place outside in the orchard so you'll need to be prepared for the weather by wearing outdoor clothes and bringing wellingtons and waterproofs in case of rain.

Course content

Meet at The Orchard Tea Room at 10am for a 10.30 start
Introductions over tea or coffee where we'll discuss what you want to gain from the course eg. which type of tree are you especially interested in, variety, age etc
A look at tools and equipment
Theory of pruning explained during practical demonstrations in the orchard
Lunch in our tea room: Delicious homemade soup & sandwich freshly prepared from local produce served with a pot of tea.
"have a go" at pruning under supervision

O Christmas Tree ! O Christmas Tree!

Our Christmas tree is up in the tea room.

It was decorated for us, in what is becoming an annual tradition, by the children of a local home education group who visit The Orchard quite regularly. These are the children who made the scarecrows for the Elm and Friday Bridge Scarecrow Competition back in June.

The Orchard is a great place for children to observe the seasons, look out for wild fauna and flora, learn how food grows and to simply have fun in a large green place and we love having the children here. Earlier in the year one of our trees featured on the front cover of an Education Outside School magazine.

Right now some of our trees are looking particularly Christmassy themselves, the leaves have fallen and the red apples hang like Christmas baubles!

We think the children have done a great job at decorating the tea room tree, our customers seem to think so too with many of them commenting on how festive it looks.

The History of Afternoon Tea

Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is credited with having invented Afternoon Tea. Sometime during the 1840's whilst suffering from "that sinking feeling"betwixt luncheon and dinner she requested something small to eat in the late afternoon. This small repast successfully staved off her hunger pangs and Afternoon Tea was born.

Anna Maria invited friends to share her Afternoon Tea and the meal soon became very popular with the upper and middle classes. What started off as a fairly light snack soon became a hearty but still dainty feast of sandwiches, scones and cakes all served with a pot of tea.

These days you don't have to wait until after luncheon to enjoy Afternoon Tea, here at The Orchard Tea Room it has proved to be a popular lunch time treat with many of our customers. We've even made it possible for you to treat someone to Afternoon Tea in your absence with the introduction of our Afternoon Tea Gift Vouchers. At £12.95 per person we think they make the perfect gift.

Art at The Orchard interview with October artist Julie Parker

We're delighted that artist Julie Parker has agreed to do a little interview for the blog, she's exhibiting a selection of her prints here at The Orchard Tea Room during October.

About Julie
"I was born on a cold icy morning, November 1983. I have always had a passion for illustration and art. As a child I would spend hours telling stories to my lovely cuddly toys through chalk drawings on the pavement! Of course times have changed and one can't always walk around with a giant piece of chalk wedged into their jeans, so now I use pencil and paper.
Since completing my degree at University College Falmouth, previously known as Falmouth College of Arts, I have been working on various illustration commissions, fine art and crafts. I love it! I'm super bubbly, love to travel, explore and express."

Julie please tell us about your work?  What are you currently working on?
oooo well I am currently working on a selection of super spooky Halloween stickers for a sticker app company called 'Papelook' based in Tokyo. I work in watercolor, pen and ink on large boards on an old retro wooden desk in my art studio...surrounded by yummy floor raisins, a heard of different buggys and blue glitter that has escaped the toddler craft draw.....

How did you decide to become an artist?
Goodness that's a tricky one, I guess I never really 'decided' to become an artist... art sort of came to me and I found a bond with the expression and love of color and humour that I could create.

What's the best advice you've been given as an artist?
"take 5 minutes, eat a bourbon, and come back to it." so true and i do love a good bourbon!

What do you do when you are not creating?
I am a full time mummy to a little 23 month old toddler, Zachary. In between all those mummy things: like crispy, crunchy walks to the park, conker collecting or teddy tea parties (with yummy fircone pie): I do love to put my feet up and drink herbal tea (because I'm pregnant again and my feet are quite fat now!)

What are your work and life goals for the future?
Awwww future dreams. Well I would love to one day open a gallery with a little shop..... But for now I am preparing to launch a shiny NEW webshop. Perfect for all your arty shopping needs! Coming soooooon (1st Novemeber 2015)

Julie you are exhibiting some of your prints here at The Orchard this October where else can we find your work?

The August Shamans Legacy Dog Show at The Orchard Tea Room Wisbech

On Sunday 23rd August Shaman's Legacy Dog Rescue held their second Fun Dog Show here at The Orchard Tea Room, Wisbech. Fortunately the weather was (mostly ) kinder than last time managing to stay dry for the majority of the show. But of course this is England and yes it ended in rain but that didn't deter anyone and a great time was had by all.

Here's what organizer Lindsey had to say, "I would like to say a MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who came to the show today, what a fantastic day it was!!!! So many lovely dogs and owners, but the thing that always shocks me is the support you guys give me at these shows, and the donations! My van always comes back more packed than what I started with!!
Special thank you owed to the one person I never envy, our judge Lisa Pearson who did a fantastic job, was welcoming to everyone and who always seems to being life to the party!!!
Also to John Parish and Julia Paul who always run my stand, keep the kids in order and pack up and just generally keep organised and on top of things!! And of course, I'm not forgetting Jim and the team and the Orchard Tea Rooms who always allow us to use their premises for free, and make the best cuts of tea ever!!!
I'd also like to thank my little man "Teabag" (as you would have heard me call him), who is a 12 year old boy I work with. He's done a great job today, really got involved with things....he helped in the ring, on the stand, with the raffle, but most importantly, he managed to keep Rex Makemson as in order as we could possibly hope for!!! You guys have been fab with him today and he has enjoyed himself loads!!
So, here's the big announcement, after the count up a HUMONGOUS £315 had been made today!!!!!! Thank you all so much, this will go a long way towards getting the vet bills in order and settling accounts owed, which is always a great feeling!!
Thank you to everyone who came, I've enjoyed myself loads and I hope you all have too?!?!
Who's up for going again next month??"
Thank you Shaman's Legacy for another brilliant dog show.

Art at The Orchard interview with July artist Sarah Madsen

We're delighted artist, illustrator and jeweller Sarah Madsen agreed to do a little interview for the blog, she's exhibiting a selection of her original artwork here at The Orchard this July.

About Sarah

Artist, Illustrator and Jeweller, Sarah Madsen attended Central Saint Martins School of Art & Design in London, England. There she gain a BA Hons Degree in Jewellery Design. The  interest in 3D Design was quite a different direction from her first love of Fine Art. The Desire to follow figurative art has been constant theme throughout her life as an artist. In 1992 the artist received a Travel Bursary from The Royal Society of British Sculptors on a Medal Design. She has also exhibited at various locations such as the Mall Galleries in London, Silvermine Art Centre in Connecticut and also at Steven Whyte Figurative Sculpture Studio in Carmel, California, USA. After 12 years living in various locations in the USA. Sarah returned to the U.K and is currently working as an Fine Artist and Jeweller.

Sarah please tell us about your work? What are you currently working on?

My work is hugely influenced by the impressionists. I gravitate towards Nature and constantly look towards all things organic. Artwise, soon to be working on a commissioned child's portrait painting on canvas. Plus Black and white Illustrations for another clients book for children. Jewellery, I currently working on a lovely  Silver Initials cufflinks commission . Otherwise building new jewellery collection...somehow have to get a tiara going soon:) Again my metalwork is inspired from plants and the natural world. I looking forward to building one off bangle in silver and 18ct Gold too.

How did you decide to become an artist?

Not sure if I "decided" as such. I always did art as a child and still have a scrap book of work from my early years. I drew on every scrap of blank paper. It never occurred to that I could "draw" until an Art teacher, ( Elani O'Hara) pointed out I could do "A"level art at the age of 13 after designing a imaginary scene for pottery class. Think my mum still has the pot..now I think of it! On her discovery of me I became the pet project and my homework was often pulled out in front of the rest of the class. How not to be popular! Seriously though I owe so much to this teacher.

What's the best advice you've been given as an artist?

Technically best advice was again given to me by Elani O'Hara...draw, measure, draw and draw. Keep sketchbooks. It all work ..talent will get you only to a certain level. Thousands of hours go into say a 1 hr sketch. As quite often we are asked how long that took to draw/paint. Any ability/ skill has the same demand, it is down to practise.

What do you do when you are not creating?

Really exciting life here there's the paperwork, housework and keeping up with 4 children between 10- 16 years of age. I do enjoy gardening and cooking. Also going to Art/Jewellery exhibitions. I also love to travel when I can.

What are your life and work goals for the future?

To be Successful and create bespoke and limited collection of one off Jewellery designs. Eventually producing Fine Enamelled pieces. To Paint more...I really enjoy people watching and would so enjoy travel and sketching all over the globe. Life goals are really down to wishing my family stay healthy and thrives and that I can enable that.

Sarah you're exhibiting some of your original artwork here at The Orchard this July where else can we find your work?
